Procession throughout the neighborhood to follow.
Every year, the 12th night after Christmas officially marks the start of Mardi Gras season in Soulard. The festivities begin with the Mardi Gras Inc. Board of Directors gathering to deliberate on whether to declare the commencement of Mardi Gras. Meanwhile, local leaders, politicians, and krewes vie for their favor, presenting spirited performances and tempting bribes of liquid refreshment.
After a lively—and often raucous—debate, the board casts its votes. In a time-honored tradition, the verdict has always been a unanimous "yes" to Mardi Gras, ensuring the celebration lives on for another year.
With the proclamation made, a lively procession of party pros and dignitaries takes to the streets, raising the Mardi Gras flag high over Soulard. It stands as a proud symbol of the season, flying throughout the neighborhood and heralding weeks of festive fun to come.
